An Adventure in Indie Game Development

Day 33: 7 March 2013

Once again, I have little to show for today (besides my previous blog post), but that’s because I’ve been doing some longer term planning and designing today, in preparation for this coming weekend.

As I think you can probably tell, I’ve been kind of derailed this week. It’s been frustrating, but I can’t imagine it’s not common. Welcome to the life of a game developer, I guess.

Enough retrospective and lamenting. On to the good stuff.

I really need something to truly get myself back on track, and I think I’ve got it. I’m always the most productive on the weekends, as you’ve probably seen by now. So I’m going to take advantage of that and take it up to 11. I’m going to set the insanely ridiculous goal of having my game functioning as a real true game by the end of the weekend or die trying.

That means being able to load and save your ships, plan your fleet, have ships and ship parts get blown up, and some variation on campaigns up and running, which gets the part about having ships that are damaged for a long term come into play.

The best part is, I know the goal is so ridiculously high that there’s only a fool’s hope of it working. I’m not stressed about actually reaching the goal. But I think it will put things into sharp focus, and give me something to aim for. I’ve been shooting in the dark for the last week; it will be nice to actually see a target again.

It looks like I’ve got a date with the Game Maker’s Scalpel this weekend.
